The first-ever U.S. exhibition on the Savonnerie, France's premier royal carpet workshop, gathering 17th-century royal carpets commissioned under Louis XIV. Rarely reunited masterpieces of royal power, prestige, and diplomacy are shown together for the first time.

Address

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 5th Ave, New York, NY 10028, USA

Community Notes

Highlights include carpet number 73, one of the most well-preserved, which survived the French Revolution intact

Don't miss the unexpected fourth carpet: an Apollo Gallery carpet made before the Grand Gallery commission, used by Marie Antoinette in 1785 for temporary game rooms

In 1668 Louis XIV commissioned 92 enormous carpets for the Louvre's Grand Gallery (a ~440-meter project); many were later stripped of royal emblems, sold, and scattered after the French Revolution

On view through March 5, 2028 โ€” plenty of time, but worth planning ahead

Check The Met's site for ticketing and current gallery location before visiting
